On January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court made its ruling in the case of Roe verses Wade which has paved the way for legalized abortion in the United States. It’s hard to give an exact number but it is estimated that three thousand abortions are performed every day. Based on that number, several sources on the internet estimate that over fifty million abortions have been performed since that time.
This statistic breaks the heart of anyone who believes what the Bible says about the beginning of life. Those who believe that a person’s life begins at the time of conception believe that each abortion that is performed takes the life of a person and is not just the termination of a pregnancy.
Listen to what the Lord says through the Psalmist in Psalm 139. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the says ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:13-16).
As our nation turns its attention to the elections of local, state, and national officials, a candidate’s stated position on this issue is of utmost importance. How will they deal with this issue? Will they seek to protect the most vulnerable people of our nation – the unborn.
While changing the abortion laws of our land are important, while such changes would save many lives, the real solution to this conflict is not to be found in congress or in the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court. It is the heart. Not until the truths of God’s Word rule one’s heart can this issue be turned around.
Once faith rules our heart, once one sees Scripture as God’s Word which governs our lives, we understand that our life is a gift of God which begins at conception. From that time on, we believe that we are each unique human beings with our own soul and identity. We also believe that we are conceived in sin. We inherit a sinful nature passed down from Adam and Eve. (Psalm 51:5- Surely I was sinful from birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” We are human beings with a soul and one who needs a Savior.
These are things one can not see under a microscope or prove with a sonogram. Only when God, through the Holy Spirit, opens our eyes to these truths, will they become important to us. One person looks at a 3-D picture of the baby in the womb and sees a fetus. Another looks at the same picture and sees a God’s awesome gift of a human being.
I am convinced that this issue will only be resolved in our nation when the hearts of its people understand that life is a precious gift from God and begins at conception. I pray that this day will come soon.
